Background: Even if anemia in HIV patients is a common finding, there are no markers for reliable diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia. Patients and methods: We therefore investigated the diagnostic value of zinc protoporphyrin (ZPP), transferrin saturation (TS), and ferritin in patients with various states of HIV infection. 76 patients with HIV infection were investigated for iron status.
