Numbers of some bird species in the Slonsk Nature Reserve in 1994-1997

Numbers of some bird species in the Slonsk Nature Reserve in 1994-1997

Biological Bulletin of Poznan 37(2): 235-255

The paper presents quantitative and qualitative of data of several bird species in the Slonsk Nature Reserve from 1994-1997. Data on water birds and birds of prey are discussed. Up to 240 species have been recorded in the reserve and surrounding areas. Among them, 26 species are regarded as endangered, vulnerable, rare or declining in Europe and 157 species breed in the reserve. A considerable number of moulting, migrating and wintering wildfowl occurs in the area. The number of migrating geese exceeds 188,000 in autumn. This places the Slonsk Reserve among the most important roosts of bean- (Anser fabalis) and white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons) in Europe. The area is also an important wintering place for up to 48 sea-eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla).
