Pleurothallis fabiobarrosii, a new Brazilian species: Morphological and genetic data with notes on the taxonomy of Brazilian rupicolous Pleurothallis

Pleurothallis fabiobarrosii, a new Brazilian species: Morphological and genetic data with notes on the taxonomy of Brazilian rupicolous Pleurothallis

Lindleyana 15(1): 2-9

Pleurothallis fabiobarrosii Borba and Semir is described and compared with the related species P. johannensis Barb. Rodr. and P. ochreata Lindl. Electrophoretic data of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase refute the hypothesis that P. fabiobarrosii originated from hybridization between P. johannensis, a species with similar floral morphology, and P. ochreata, a species sympatric to P. fabiobarrosii and vegetatively similar. On the other hand, the genetic results support the establishment of P. fabiobarrosii as a distinct species and not just a variety of P. johannensis, as one might suggest due to the morphological similarities. We propose the synonymization of P. rupestris under P. teres and the re-establishment of P. johannensis, a species generally considered as synonymous with P. rupestris.
