Seasonal incidence of rice leaffolder Cnaphalocrocis medinalis Guenee (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and its natural parasites

The incidence of rice leaffolder Cnaphalocrocis medinalis Guenee (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) was studied with respect to 11 varieties of rice and three seasons at Jahangirnagar University (JU) campus and in some areas of Savar and Gazipur from December 1997 to November 1998. The incidence and damage varied greatly according to the varieties of rice and the seasons. The incidence was the highest in BR-11 and comparatively less in IR-8, IR-20, BR-3, Nayapajam, BR-20, BR-14, BR-26, BR-28, Brishail and Sonali. Among Boro, Aus and T. Aman seasons, the incidence of C. medinalis was the highest in T. Aman and the lowest in Boro. The highest incidence of adults, caught by light traps, occurred in October and May. Attempts were made to evaluate the natural parasitisation rate of C. medinalis larvae in the fields. Several potential parasites with seasonal variation in incidence were identified. The natural parasitisation rate of C. medinalis larvae was 14.1% in T. Aman, 11.2% in Boro and 10.8% in Aus.
