ISSN/ISBN: 0025-8628

The Salmonella genus, according to the WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Salmonella, consists of two species: Salmonella enterica and Salmonella bongori comprising 2449 different serovars. Six subspecies have been distinguished within S. enterica: subsp. enterica, S. enterica subsp. salamae, S. enterica subsp. arizonae, S. enterica subsp. diarizonae, S. enterica subsp. houtenae and S. enterica subsp. indica while S. bongori is a homogenous group of bacteria. The article discusses the biochemical and serological differentiation of salmonella as well as current changes in Salmonella nomenclature.
