The utilisaton of hydro power in a changing electricity market

The utilisaton of hydro power in a changing electricity market

Oesterreichische Wasser- und Abfallwirtschaft 51(9-10): 242-248

Against the background of falling prices for fossil energies and the growing effects of the liberalisation of the energy markets, hydro power as a source of energy has to find its new position and a new image. One possibility of creating such a new image, a possibility that has in fact quite often been applied in various forms, is providing hydro power with an environmental label; after all, as a renewable source of energy, hydro has largely favourable ecological effects from the viewpoint of energy generation. Continued use of this source of energy and continuous and lasting improvements carried out in the catchment areas above generation plants will play an important part in the protection of our environment.
