Ultraviolet disinfection of municipal wastewater treatment effluents: Pilot studies with a low-pressure system using thermotolerant coliforms and Clostridium perfringens as indicators

Ultraviolet disinfection of municipal wastewater treatment effluents: Pilot studies with a low-pressure system using thermotolerant coliforms and Clostridium perfringens as indicators

Vecteur Environnement 32(6): 34-43

The purpose of this article is to provide information about the disinfection tests recently performed on a physical-chemical treatment effluent using a low pressure, high intensity UV irradiation system. These tests were conducted on behalf of the Regie Intermunicipale d'assainissement des eaux Rosemere-Lorraine, as part of an evaluation process of new technologies for future facilities, using a pilot unit from UV Systems Technology Inc. An evaluation of the results included among other factors an Energy Consumption Analysis effected by Hydro-Quebec. The biological indicators Escherichia coli and Clostridium perfringens were tested under numerous flow conditions and doses when the UV water transmission was near 38% at 254 nm. The tests show that the system studied meets the treatment objectives required by governmental authorities as well as the technical objectives for this project. The results obtained indicate that kinetic inactivation differs depending on which biological indicator is used and that the effect sought by wastewater disinfection would essentially apply to less resistant pathogenic organisms (for example: fecal coliforms). The economical analysis of UV disinfection of wastewater, based on a cost per cubic meter, indicates that this disinfection method is economical and appropriate for the North-American context.
