Young rabbit rearing is a decisive factor in breeding success

Young rabbit rearing is a decisive factor in breeding success

Biuletyn Informacyjny Instytut Zootechniki 36(2): 35-46

This article presents some factors affecting young rabbit rearing, which has an influence on profitability of rabbit production and breeding. Review of relevant literature has shown that the number of rabbits born and reared per female depends on many factors including breed, season, age of female at first mating, different time of mating after kindling, weaning method and technique, pharmacological prophylaxis and rational feeding of young and female rabbits. An outline of rabbit rearing with mothers is followed by various weaning techniques. Our studies have shown that weaning in the early fattening period reduce mortality by 10%. Weaning age may range from 28 to 35 days depending on the system and intensity of production. The causes and extent of young rabbit mortality are presented from birth to end of fattening. Probiotics given to feed are one of the factors limiting young rabbit mortality during rearing. The amount of dietary protein and amino acid composition have been shown toaffect not only carcass composition but also slaughter yield. Low-protein diets have been found to increase the risk of excessive carcass fatness. The possibility of using taste enhancers (molasses) in feed has also been pointed out. Finally rabbit prophylaxis in the rearing period, preventive vaccination, and feeding hygiene principles that prevent mass mortality are discussed.
