Application of color Doppler ultrasonography in diagnosis of cervical vertebral injury complicated with vertebral artery trauma

Objective: To study the role of color Doppler ultrasonographic diagnosis of cervical vertebral injury complicated with vertebral artery trauma. Methods: Bilateral vertebral arteries in 12 patients with close cervical vertebral trauma were examined. The course, inner diameter, endothelium, flow velocity and resistance index of vertebral arteries and presence or absence of thrombus in the arteries were evaluated by color Doppler ultrasonography pre and postoperation. Results: Three patients had unilateral vertebral artery trauma complicated with thrombosis and obstruction; 1 patient had mild injury in bilateral arteries, the rest 8 patients had no abnormality in the arteries; nerve symptoms of the patient with mild injury in the arteries were vanished. Conclusions: Color Doppler ultrasonography can provide with diagnostic information such as position, degree of vertebral artery trauma and hemodynamics of vertebral arteries in patients with cervical vertebral injury.
