Effect of environmental factors on annual reproductive cycle of female common myna Acridotheres tristis

Annual reproduction in birds and-mammals is regulated by an interaction between external environmental and internal hormonal factors. The degree of environmental control of physiology varies among various seasonal breeders. In birds, most of the studies on the environmental control of seasonal breeding have focused on effect of the annual changes in the day length and less on other environmental factors. Routine histological preparations of slides have been done to observe the annual changes in gonads. The animal breeds in the months of April to June at high temperature and light. When the temperature is low, the reproductive organs show minimum activities, thereby showing a short interrelationship between environment and reproduction.
