Abstract
Callus Was induced from the pads of Opuntia microdasys (Lehm.) Pfeiff. and friable calli were used to initiate cell suspension Cultures. Growth of calli and suspension Cultures was developed on MSMO medium supplemented with BA and 2,4-D. Red pigmentation, which is produced possibly due to phytoalexin-flavonoid formation, was observed when the Cell Cultures were exposed to chitin or chitosan, fungal elicitation mimics.
