Root and shoot characteristics as selection criteria for drought tolerance in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) at seedling stage under tropical environment

To identify shoot and root traits that are associated with drought tolerance in bread wheat, two concurrent experiments were conducted in the year 2001/02. Three drought tolerant checks (Duma, 3 2xChozi and Ngamia), three susceptible checks (Chiriku, Pasa and Mbuni) and ten advanced lines (KM20, KM18, R836, R840, R913, KM21, KM15, KM14, R920 and R917) were tested using box pin technique under drought and fully irrigated control for two seasons during seedling stage.
