Study on hemodynamic changes of the ophthalmic artery with color Doppler ultrasonography after strabismus surgery

Objective: To investigate the blood flow changes in ophthalmic artery (OA), posterior ciliary artery (PCA) and central retinal artery (CRA) with color Doppler ultrasonography after strabismus surgery. Methods: Fifty-one eyes of 51 patients who underwent redession-resection surgery on one or two horizontal rectus muscles were examined using color Doppler ultrasonography preoperatively and 1 week, 1 month postoperatively. The systolic maximum velocity, end-diastolic velocity, resistance index of the OA, PCA and CRA were determined and measurements from normal subjects were served as control data. The test was performed. Hemodynamic changes in the study group were compared to those in the control group and compared preoperative to postoperative. Results: 1. No difference in any hemodynamic parameters in the OA, PCA, CRA (P > 0.05) was observed preoperatively between the study and control groups; 2. The ophthalmic artery showed a significant increase in systolic maximum velocity and, RI 1 week postoperatively (P < 0.05); 3. There were no statistically significant differences (P > 0.05 ) in velocities or resistance in OA, PCA, CRA 1 month postoperatively. Conclusions: One or two horizontal rectus muscle operations did cause significant hemodynamic changes in the ophthalmic artery 1 week postoperatively, but these changes revived normally 1 month postoperatively.
