Effects of fungicides, biocontrol agents and plant extracts on sorghum seed infection

Effects of fungicides, biocontrol agents and plant extracts on sorghum seed infection

Journal of Ecobiology 17(5): 461-465

ISSN/ISBN: 0970-9037

Some fungicides (carbendazim, mancozeb and thiram; at 0.1%), biological control agents (20% culture filtrates of Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas fluorescens and Trichoderma viride) and leaf extracts (Albizia amara, Catharanthus roseus and Prosopis juliflora; at 20%) were tested for their antifungal activity against sorghum seedborne pathogens: Acremonium strictum, Alternaria tenius Aspergillus niger, A. flavus, Curvularia lunata Fusarium moniliforme (Gibberella moniliformis), Helminthosporium halodes (Setosphaeria rostrata) and H. tetramera (Cochliobolus spicifer). Thiram and mancozeb completely eradicated all the seedborne pathogens in the seed, except for H. halodes, F. moniliforme and Acremonium strictum. The 20% culture filtrates of B. subtilis and P. fluorescens, and 20% leaf extract of C. roseus also eradicated all the pathogens, except for Aspergillus flavus, Acremonium strictum, Alternaria tenuis, and the reduction of percentage seed infection with these treatments was less compared to that of fungicidal treatment. An improved seed germination was found with thiram (88.50%), B. subtilis (87.50%), T. viride (86.50%) and mancozeb (86.00%).
