Epidemic of Trichinella nativa trichinosis caused by consumption of bear meat, France, 2005

Bulletin Epidemiologique Hebdomadaire (14): 96-98

On 22 September 2005, health services in France were notified of the hospitalization in Orleans of 5 patients with fever, myalgia and hypereosinophilia. The 5 subjects had eaten the same meal: bear meat brought back by one of them from a hunting trip to Canada. The following day, 2 more probable cases of Trichinella infection were admitted to hospital in Limoges; these two cases were also part of a hunting party returned from Quebec, Canada, where they had consumed bear meat.
