Epidemiological trends of leprosy elimination in CLTRI rural field operation area, Tamil Nadu, India

The leprosy indices observed in rural field operation area of CLTRI with population of 148 500 in 2005 are presented. The prevalence rate (PR) declined from 275 per 10 000 in 1986 to 131 per 10 000 after the screening programme of the then existing cases before introducing multi-drug therapy (MDT). Thereafter the PR dramatically declined from 95 per 10 000 in 1987 to 0.7 per 10 000 in 2005.
