Epidemiology of antibacterial resistance in Enterococcus spp. from Cuba and other Latin American countries

Epidemiology of antibacterial resistance in Enterococcus spp. from Cuba and other Latin American countries

Drug resistance of enterococci: epidemiology and molecular mechanisms: 1-20

This chapter presents data collected by the National Laboratory of Microbiology in Havana, Cuba regarding the prevalence of nosocomial enterococcal infections in the country for the period 2000-2004, and then discusses the prevalence of vancomycin-, beta -lactam antibiotic-, aminoglycoside antibiotic-, fluoroquinolone-, chloramphenicol-, quinupristin/dalfopristin-, linezolid-, and tetracycline-resistant Enterococcus spp. (especially, E. faecium and E. faecalis) in Cuba and other Latin American countries. The molecular mechanisms of resistance to vancomycin, beta -lactam antibiotics, and aminoglycoside antibiotics are described. Data on antibiotic resistance rates according to the clinical source of Enterococcus isolates in Cuba are also presented. The prevalence of human gastrointestinal colonization by vancomycin-resistant enterococci in Cuba, and the public health importance of the emergence of antibiotic-resistant Enterococcus spp. in the intestine of poultry and livestock animals, as a consequence of using antibiotics as growth promoters in animal feeding, are briefly discussed.
