Estimates of genetic parameters for reproductive, growth and carcass traits in the Alentejana breed of cattle

Genetic parameters for birth weight (direct-BWa and maternal-BWm), weaning weight adjusted to 7 months of age (direct-WWa and maternal-WWm), mature weight (MW), calving interval (CI), longevity (LR), total number of calves produced (TNC), age at first calving (A1C), average daily gain in performance testing (ADG), meat yield as percentage of carcass weight (MY) and the percentage of meat cuts in the extra (%EX) and first (%1C) categories were estimated in Alentejana breed of cattle using restricted maximum likelihood methodology applied to a multiple trait animal model. Heritability estimates were 0.56+or-0.078, 0.17+or-0.030, 0.50+or- 0.070, 0.21+or-0.035, 0.24+or-0.044, 0.06+or-0.014, 0.06+or-0.014, 0.06+or-0.014, 0.05+or-0.019, 0.15+or-0.086, 0.30+or-0.067 and 0.15+or-0.056, respectively, for BWa, BWm, WWa, WWm, MW, CI, LR, TNC, A1C, ADG, MY, %EX and %1C.
