Estimation and use of allometric growth rates in practical pig breeding

Influence of carcass weight (X) and genetics on carcass composition (Y) is described through using allometric growth rate functions (Y=b x Xk). Estimated functions are applied to predict the suitability of genotypes in different markets. Grading and dissection data were collected on slaughter pigs from the IPG research farm. Relative growth factors (k) for the primals ham (0.91) and shoulder (0.90) showed an early growth. The primals loin (1.10) and belly (1.29) showed a late growth.
