Evaluating forestry potential on a site without observing the flora. Presentation of a method developped in a lime-rich mediterranean region

A study of 5000 km2 of Mediterranean sites in Fracne showed that the availability of water was the main factor limiting its forestry potential. This evaluation method was based on assessing regional data (climate and geography) from 315 areas, followed by site data (topography, slope, geology, and pedology). Distribution of plants was mainly determined by availability of water and a floristic index was calculated based on soil water balance.
