Genetic analysis for yield and yield components in seven crosses among sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) x Sudan grass (Sorghum sudanense)

Genetic analysis for yield and yield components (green and dry fodder yields per plant, dry matter percentage, number of days to 50% flowering, plant height, stem thickness, number of nodes, number of leaves per plant, and total leaf area) was conducted for the P1, P2, F1, BC1, BC2 and F2 generations of 7 crosses between S. bicolor and S. sudanense genotypes (SDSL 92101 x UPMC 2, SDSL 92101 x IS 3359, SDSL 92101 x SDSI 92102, SDSL 92101 x SDSL 92111, SDSL 92101 x UPFS 23, SDSL 92101 x UPFS 25 and SDSL 92101 x UPFS 30) grown in Pantnagar, Uttaranchal, India. Pooled analysis of variance revealed that the variation between families and between progenies within a family was significant for green fodder yield per plant and dry matter percentage. The genetic model was adequate for fodder yield and related traits. The additive-dominance and digenic interaction models were adequate for explaining the nature and magnitude of gene effects for all traits. The additive genetic effects were significant for all characters except for number of days to 50% flowering. The dominance gene effects were significant for the majority of the traits. The additive and non-additive gene effects were significant for all traits.
