In this study, scrapie-free New Zealand (NZ) Cheviot sheep (VRQ/VRQ, VRQ/ARQ and ARQ/ARQ genotypes) where placed with sheep in Institute of Animal Health's neuropathogenesis unit (NPU), where scrapie is endemic. Three VRQ/VRQ sheep died unexpectedly; one was negative for scrapie while the other 2 had an unknown aetiology.
