Quantitative and molecular genetic approaches for the improvement of carcass traits in the Wagyu cattle

Quantitative and molecular genetic approaches for the improvement of carcass traits in the Wagyu cattle

Proceedings of the 8th World Congress on Genetics Applied to Livestock Production, Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil, 13-18 August, 2006: 13-01

Statistical and molecular approaches to genetic improvement of carcass traits, especially marbling, are reviewed focusing on the investigation and application in Japan. There are four beef cattle breeds, so called Wagyu, known for highly marbled meat. An on-farm testing program for evaluating carcass traits of sires and dams with BLUP has been adopted. Heritabilities for the carcass traits were estimated generally high over 0.4.
