Retrovirus-like elements in plants

Recent research developments in plant science Vol 3: 15-24

LTR (long terminal repeats) retrotransposons with structures that are identical to those found in simple vertebrate retroviruses, including a putative env gene, have been discovered in plants. Those potential plant retroviruses can be classified into two classes. The first one is formed by the Arabidopsis thaliana Athila elements and many other closely related env-containing elements. All of them belong to the Ty3/Gypsy group of LTR retrotransposons.
