Africa - facing alternative futures. Prospects for and paths to food security in Africa

Africa - facing alternative futures. Prospects for and paths to food security in Africa

IFPRI 2020 Africa Conference Brief (17): 6 pp.

Different food policy scenarios in Africa are examined: a business as usual scenario which assumes a continuation of current trends and existing plans in food policy, management and investment; a pessimistic scenario which envisions a future in which trends in agriculture production and nutrition deteriorate by comparison with the business as usual scenario; a vision scenario which attempts to show what type of transformation would be necessary for Africa to battle childhood malnutrition as effectively as the rest of the developing world; three water scenarios that assume that effective rainfall increases evenly over the projection period; a reduction in marketing margins scenario where rural infrastructure, marketing and communications are improved; and three trade liberalization scenarios. By modelling the results of the different policy scenarios through the year 2025, it is shown that the number of malnourished children, an important indicator of food security, could rise as high as 41.9 million or fall as low as 9.4 million.
