The performance of broiler chickens fed diets containing viscous grains (wheat) is generally poorer than those fed diets containing non-viscous grains (maize and sorghum) and the hypothesis that these differences in performance are related, partly, to differences in relative digestive tract size and intestinal morphology was tested in this study. It was found that the weight gain was greater (P<0.05) in the birds fed the maize diet than those fed the sorghum diet.
