Changes in sugarcane area for sugar production due to drought, infestation by the sugarcane wooly aphid (SWA) (Ceratovacuna lanigera) and other factors were studied in 52 representative zones in Maharashtra, India (15, 24 and 13 from the south, central and north-east zones, respectively), during 2003-04 and 2004-05. In Maharashtra as a whole, drought and SWA reduced the area under sugarcane in 2004-05 by 0.13 and 1.75%, respectively, relative to 2003-04.
