On the present commonly used Chinese character with the component of 'chong' insect in Chinese

, : On the present commonly used Chinese character with the component of 'chong' insect in Chinese. Kunchong Zhishi ; 43(6): 885-888

Insects are closely tied to human basic necessities of life. Chinese characters are the basic unit of Chinese culture. A scientific classification of the present commonly used Chinese characters with chong ((sic) insect in Chinese) as their component are reviewed. There are 262 characters of this kind, including 205 simplified and 57 traditional ones, and 40% of the simplified ones belong to Insecta. Such characters distribute among 28 orders, and most of them belong to Orthoptera, Coleoptera, Homoptera and Lepidoptera. A large percentage of these characters refer to cicadae and locusts. The study reveals to certain extent the relationship between insects and Chinese culture and our ancestors' cognition of entomology.
