Infection impairs vitamin A status by depressing serum levels of retinol and retinol binding protein (RBP). This marked effect was seen in children with chicken pox, bronchitis, upper respiratory infection and stomatitis, and also in adults with upper respiratory infection, bronchitis, tonsillitis, diarrhea, gastrointestinal disorder, urinary infection and shigellosis. Dietary intake of vitamin A remained constant in all subjects; no vitamin A supplement was given during the study period. Levels of retinol and RBP were restored following recovery from infectious disease. Infection may reduce serum retinol via a mechanism which impairs retinol release from the liver or by means of increasing RBP turnover.
