Farm size, tenure, and economic efficiency in a sample of Illinois grain farms

Farm size, tenure, and economic efficiency in a sample of Illinois grain farms

American journal of agricultural economics 64(1): 119-123

This paper uses a unit profit function to examine if differences in economic efficiency are related to farm size and tenure for a sample of Illinois grain farms. Due to the homogeneity of the sample's management input, efficiency differences encountered are more likely to be related to these structural dimensions. Results indicate larger operations are no more efficient than moderate-sized farms. The degree of land ownership by the operator is inversely related to short-run profit. Research on differences between sample farms and the population of Midwestern farms and in the dynamic aspects of the structural question seems warranted.
