Gulp--an alternate method for teaching teens

Gulp--an alternate method for teaching teens

Journal of Nutrition Education 9(1): 12-16

Major nutritional concerns of 281 teens answering a preliminary 1973 survey, matched with their design and format preferences, resulted in the production of a fantasy type comic entitled "Gulp." Group reaction to "Gulp" as a nutrition education tool wasmeasured and the majority of all youth were able to select the intended messages of the comic book episodes. Lower ability or younger youth expressed difficulty in understanding some of the vocabulary and subtle humor, causing many teachers to estimate ideal age for use of the comic as somewhere between 14-16, 8th 10th grade. Most teachers felt "Gulp" was original, informative and thought provoking and could be used effectively as a nutrition teaching tool with some simplification of vocabulary and page design.
