Long-chain omega 3 fatty acids are the most effective polyunsaturated fatty acids for dietary prevention and treatment of cardiovascular risk factors

Long-chain omega 3 fatty acids are the most effective polyunsaturated fatty acids for dietary prevention and treatment of cardiovascular risk factors

World review of nutrition and dietetics 9(69): 74-112

This report summarizes the authors' results from several clinical trials using vegetable oils or canned fish as various sources of dietary polyunsaturated fats. The study design was similar in several of the investigations in order to compare the results more accurately between the studies. From the data presented, it appears that with respect to their lipid-lowering effect, alpha-linolenic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid diets are similar. This is different from the blood-pressure lowering-effect, which is most pronounced during diets rich in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids.
