An overview of recent trends in population indicators that relate to food, nutrition, and the nutritionally-related health situation in Malaysia, is presented, including available data from recent community-level nutrition assessment surveys. Topics include: mortality in 1-4 year-old children; low birthweight incidence; recent trends in food pattern and food availability; community-level nutritional status; intestinal parasitism; and the significant correlation between nutrition and affluence. While some indicators suggest that nutritional status is improving, others clearly indicate that major nutritional and nutritionally-related problems continue to exist. (wz)
