Vitamin D status of the elderly: contributions of sunlight exposure and diet

Recent studies of elderly subjects in Finland indicate that vitamin D status was affected both by dietary vitamin D intakes and the degree of exposure to sunlight. These studies revealed a marked seasonal variation in 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) levels. It may be possible to enhance the vitamin D status of such elderly by increasing their intakes of vitamin D-rich foods (fish and fish products) and/or by increased sunlight exposure, but the decreased ability of the kidney in the aged to convery 25-OHD to its 1,25 dihydroxy metabolite hormone still remains a problem in the aged.
