A summary of the new World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for drinking water quality is presented, providing a description of some of the scientific and technical issues that influenced the guideline values that were subsequently adopted by the WHO. Guideline values have been established for microbiological and biological safety (specifically for fecal and total coliforms), toxic or hazardous chemicals (9 inorganics, 18 organics), aesthetic and organoleptic constituents and characteristics, and radioactive materials. Implementation of the guidelines is discussed. (wz)
