In a field experiment on dryland of the loess region, 4 winter wheat varieties (Shaan 253, Shaan 229, Xiaoyan 503 and Xiaoyan 22) were supplied with nitrogen (N) at 0, 60, 120, 180 and 300 kg/ha. The highest N uptake during the whole growth period occurred from the reviving stage to the anthesis stage. While varying with variety, nitrogen accumulation generally increased with N rate. Nitrogen accumulation was highest in Xiaoyan 22, followed in sequence by Shaan 253, Xiaoyan 503 and Shaan 229.
