Contrary to earlier opinions the larvae of acorn weevils and acorn moths leave the acorns a long time (48-77 days) after collection of the acorns. The emergence period can last until late November, early December. It means that a considerable part of the damaged acorns appear undamaged even in the second half of November. So at the time of collection (i.e. mid October) the ratio of damaged acorns can be correctly evaluated only by dissecting the acorns.
