A developmental analysis of heterosis in Lycopersicon. I. The relation of growth rate to heterosis. II. The role of the apical meristem in heterosis

The crosses studied were L. esculentum x L. pimpinellifolium and L. esculentum x L. race-migerum. Heterosis was in each case manifested as an increase in total plant size; the number and not the size of individual organs was increased. In both crosses the hybrid grew faster than either parent in the early seedling stages and in the fruiting stages; but the differences were much less during the grand period of growth.
