A statistical note on certain rice-breeding experiments in the Central Provinces

In a recent account of "Rice-breeding in the Central Provinces" Mahata and Dave report yield tests in which 10 vars. developed by hybridization were compared with 3 parent vars. The 13 vars. were grown in plots 4 X 4 ft. replicated 13 times by the Latin square method. The means and standard deviations, based on 13 samples, were used in determining the significance of the results. Mahalanobis has subjected the reported yields to a more recent statistical treatment which gave a more accurate analysis of the quantitative results and established some significant differences in yield that were not given in the original paper. The new statistical procedure is followed step by step.
