Acid-base balance of new-born infants. 2. Consideration of the low alkaline reserve of normal new-born infants

Acid-base balance of new-born infants. 2. Consideration of the low alkaline reserve of normal new-born infants

Amer. J. Dis. Child, 44: 31-39

A study if 40 healthy new-born infants (1-9 days old). The carbon dioxide of the serum was decreased, the chloride increased, the total base and pH the same as in a series of healthy adults. The sum of anions other than chlorine and carbonic acid was within the adult range. The fall in bicarbonate is attributed to the increase in chlorine which it is suggested is due to some dehydration and consequent decrease of urinary water for the normal renal excretion of chlorine.
