Analysis of various artificially produced mutations in homozygous lines of Vorstenland tobacco

The Vorstenland tobaccos are the result of continued inbreeding and are absolutely pure lines. It is desired to improve them in certain isolated characters, retaining the rest of the genotype identical. The ideal way to effect this would be by monofactorial mutation. By X-ray treatment of 2 Kanari lines 20 mutant forms were obtained, most of which on selfing gave a high proportion of Kanaris. One, however, was a chlorina and bred true, another a gigas.
