A comparative study of root systems and tops of 18 vars. growing in irrigated heavy clay loam at Fort Collins, Colo. where the water table was at a depth of about 16 ft. The roots were examined July 16, about 15 months after planting. The maximum depth ranged from 10.5 in. for Aroma to 40 for Mastodon, and the working depth from 8 in. for Aroma, Parsons (Gibson), Pearl and Pride of Denver to 30 for Mastodon. The maximum lateral spread varied from 12 to 40 in. The main roots were usually about 1 mm. in diam. near the crown and varied in number from 7 in Eaton to 75 in Minnehaha. Vegetative characters measured indicating comparative development of tops were width of row, height of leaves, survival of original plantings, number of runners and yellow coloration of tops. 3 classes were made of the vars. based on the development of tops and 3 classes also based on development of roots. A few vars. showed little or no relationship between root and top development; otherwise relationship was observed.
