Although the poisonous character of Lotus arabicus had long been known to the Arabs, European interest was first aroused in it by losses of transport animals it occasioned to the Anglo-Egyptian army during the Sudanese campaign in 1896-1900. Subsequent investigation led to the discovery that toxicity was due to the liberation of hydrocyanic acid by the interaction of an enzyme, lotase, and a cyanogenetic glucoside, lotusin.
