Abstract
Microsporocytes of the highly fertile hybrids between annual teosinte and maize were studied (aceto-carmine smear method). Studies of microsporocytes of hybrids between translocation stocks of maize and the Florida variety of annual teosinte revealed that both ends of maize chromosomes 1, 2, 6 and 7 paired closely with teosinte homologs. Pairing of maize chromosomes 8, 9, and possibly 5 is less complete, a large percentage of diakinesis figures showing at least one end unpaired. Two unequal chromosome pairs are seen in microsporocytes of ordinary maize and Florida teosinte. Maize chromosomes 1, 2, 6 and 7 appear not to be involved in either pair. Backcross data for segments of maize chromosomes 1, 2, 3 and 7 in hybrids gave cross over values similar to those in pure maize. Only 5% crossing-over occurred between genes in a segment of maize chromosome 9, 52 map units in length, and genes in the Florida teosinte "homolog.".
