The present work determines the part played by fungi in the deterioration of abaca (Manila hemp) fibre, complaints against which have been received from all localities of the Philippines since 1920. Defective fibre is characterized by weakness, brittleness, sometimes a dull, dark, dirty colour, and a musty odour which is more pronounced in moist than in dry fibre. A number of fungi were isolated from deteriorated abaca.
