Effect of severity of pruning on top regeneration in citrus trees

Effect of severity of pruning on top regeneration in citrus trees

Proceedings American Society Hort Science 39: 67-72

A study of the rate of top regeneration during the 2-yr. period following light, medium, and heavy pruning of 23 ten-yr.-old trees of 2 vars. of orange and one each of grapefruit and lemon provided the following conclusions (1) The rate of top regeneration in response to pruning may be detd. experimentally with equal accuracy by comparing the fresh wts. of (a) the branches and leaves, (b) the above-ground parts, or (c) the total wts. of the trees: (2) Rate of top regeneration and resumption of fruiting were inversely proportional to the severity of treatment; severely pruned trees made much more new growth the 2d year than the 1st but lightly pruned trees made more new growth the 1st year: (3) Lightly pruned trees reestablished a full complement of leaves during the 1st year; heavily pruned trees failed to do so within the 2 yrs. of the expt.
