Experimental production of hybrid tomato seed

The technique used to obtain hybrid tomato seed at the Cheyenne Hort. Field Station is described. Results of 2 seasons' work are presented. Pollination of the tomato flowers by hand was accomplished in the following manner pollen from the [male] plant was gathered on a glass slide by use of an electric vibrator, then applied to the emasculated [female] flower. Tomato plants of the same parentage were grown under both field and greenhouse conditions with some of the plants hand-pollinated and some left unemasculated to serve as checks. Fruit set in the greenhouse was found to be 66.4% while in the field it was 63.9% for the 1944 season. Fewer hand-pollinated fruits were required to produce an ounce of seed in the greenhouse in comparison with hand-pollinated field-grown fruits. The amt. of time involved in pollinating 100 fruits was also less in the greenhouse than in the field. However, an ounce of hybrid seed was calculated to be produced by 2.6 hrs. of pollinating time in the greenhouse and 3 hrs. in the field.
