In the last 40 years, since Irie and his coworkers began their study on the chemical constituents of red algal genus Laurencia (Rhodomelaceae, Ceramiales), numerous marine natural products chemists have reported varieties of halogenated secondary metabolites, particularly terpenoids and C15 acetogenins that are not encountered in any terrestrial organisms.
