Influence of copper on the growth of microorganisms.

A method of judging whether a soil is liable to "reclamation disease" of cereals, by the colour of the spores of Aspergillus niger grown in culture solution, in the absence of copper and with the addition of a gramme of the soil under examination. 50 kg. CuSO4 per hectare is sufficient to control the disease in most cases. Peat soils form the exception. In these soils most of the original Cu is in an insoluble form and most of that applied appears to become fixed in the same manner.
