Maize hybrids of the Dnepropetrovsk State Breeding Station

Work for some years at the Dnepropetrovsk Plant Breeding Station has included a study of 250 varietal combinations made with the object of utilizing hybrid vigour to obtain high yields. The results have shown that not every combination of varieties gives an increased yield in the F1 as compared with the parent or the standard varieties. Out of 24 combinations only 40% showed a higher yield than the standards. The best crosses were those in which both parents or one were a standard variety.
